Our Stump Grinding Process

We use a self-propelled stump grinder that can fit through a typical yard gate.

Here’s how it works:

1.) Prep: We clear any rocks or debris from around the base of the stump. If the stump is tall, we’ll trim it lower with a chainsaw to speed up grinding.

2.) Grind: Our machine’s rotating cutting wheel systematically grinds the stump wood into small chips. We grind about 6-10 inches below the surface (or deeper if you plan to replant a new tree in the same spot). This ensures the main stump is gone.

3.) Tackle Surface Roots: If the tree had large surface roots radiating out, we grind those down a bit below grade as well so they won’t be bumps in your lawn.

4.) Clean-up: You’ll be left with a pile of fresh wood chips mixed with soil where the stump was. We can either haul away the grindings or fill the hole back in with those chips and additional topsoil on top (your choice). After a few weeks, the ground may settle – just top up with a bit more soil and seed it. In a short time, it will be like the stump was never there!
